Historical Places

Pazhoor Padippura & Perumthrikkovil

Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil is a Hindu temple located at piravom Police Station limit and near Piravom Town , Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. Iit is sandhara type temple with cardinal doors on Four sides. The plinth and the wall together are of granite stone work and the rest of timber and sheet roof in circulr vimana. Dwarapalakas are made of wood. Main deity sivalinga is facing east. Square ardhamandapa contains beautiful wooden carvings on the ceiling. Pranala is a typical ornate Keral type with standing yaksha bearing at its tip. It has some of the notable examples of old workman ship in wood, illustrating various puranic scenes and figures from Bhagavata, Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple can be dated to 12th century AD

The picturesque Pazhoor, is situated 25 km towards the southeast of Kochi, near Piravom. The legends associated with the famous Siva temple and the astrologers of Padippura , (traditional gate of ancient house) of Mullassery Mana, here are so interlinked that person visiting one place invariably goes to the other too. The temple is believed to be nearly 1800 years old. A unique phenomenon observed here is that the Muvattupuzha river flowing west from east changes direction on reaching the temple. It retraces its path and flows east for a certain distance before diverting again to north and west. Had the river not changed its course, The temple would have been washed away.

Description: It was a small temple at the early stages and was renovated by a Namboodiri who had come to meet the astrologer of Pazhoor Padippura. The astrologer, on finding in the horoscope that the Namboodiri will die of snake bite that day, asked him to come the next day. On coming to know about his fate from his friend who had been informed by the astrologer, the Namboodiri passed the night near the temple worshipping a stone symbolised as Siva Linga. He had a divine call in the night urging him to renovate the temple. In the morning, he found a dead serpent under the stone. The surprised astrologer advised the Namboodiri to go by the inner call and rebuild the temple in to a bigger one. Thus, the present Perumthrikkovil, (large temple) with intricate carvings was born Thalakulathoor Govindan Bhattathiripad, the author of the astrological treatise Dasaddyayi, came to Pazhoor temple, from where the legend of Pazhoor Padippura in front of Mullasseri Mana stars. The Namboodiri of the mana which is nearly 1,500 years old, once went to Kashi. Since he did not return for a longtime, the Namboodiris of the locality decided to entrust the Mana to a Pazhoor Kaniyar (astrologer in local parlance) for its upkeep. Thus, the began residing in the Mana .Around this time, Govindan Bhattathiripad while going through his horoscope one day found that he will be ostracized from his cast.

In worship, he came to Pazhoor temple. On the fateful day, after prayer he went for a ride in the country boat on the Moovattupuzha river. He was so much engrossed in the trip that he became oblivious of the passing time. Soon it became dark and he was swayed away from the course by a storm and heavy rain. He reached the Kulikkadavu (traditional bathing ghat) . He entered and began sleeping on the verandah certain that it belonged to a Mana.

Kenyans wife is waiting for her husbands return, who had gone to a far-away place. When she opened the door she found A man lying outside in the dark. Thinking that it was her husband, she went and slept with him. In the morning both recognized their mistake. Bhattathiripad blessed the Kanyars wife that she would conceive a son who would be well versed in astrology. Returned 12 years later and taught his son all about astrology. Thus started the line of the legendary Pazhoor Padippura astrologers. The present astrologer P S Surendran is the descendant in the line. He gives astrological advice the Padippura where Bhattathiripad Samadhi is situated
